Adela Out Of The Olympia

     Reigning IFBB Fitness Olympia Champion Adela Garcia won't be defending her title this September in Las Vegas at the Fitness Olympia, she is out of the show. Garcia was practicing her routine on the 17th of July when she heard a pop and her right knee gave out. She knew there was something wrong because the knee felt unstable but she was still able to do cardio and train, she just stopped practicing her routine hoping the injury wasn't serious. Garcia knew she was injured but didn't want to believe it was that bad, "when I hurt it I saw it happen in the mirror but I was in denial, I didn't want to believe it was that bad. I just kept training and hoping it would get better. I was able to train and do cardio, it just felt weird some times so I just iced it and didn't do my routine."
     Garcia finally went to see Dr. Robert Meyer who at first felt she may have injured her MCL based on his initial examination. He ordered an MRI for Garcia on the morning of Monday July 28th and she got the results that afternoon, "About 6 hours after the MRI the doctor called and asked me if I was sitting down. He told me my ACL was completely torn and he was amazed I was still able to do all the things I had been doing. He told me then I would need surgery and that there was no way I would be able to do the Olympia this year. I was devastated, this is what I love to do and its my bread and butter. I can't believe I won't be competing in the Olympia this year."
Dr. Meyer referred Garcia to Dr. Burns who is a very well known surgeon specializing in this sort of injury. The schedule for surgery has been expedited since she is a professional athlete. She will have her surgery on August 12th.
     Garcia is still struggling with accepting the injury, "I am alright sometime and other times not. I have been competing every year since 1997 without a break. I won't have competed at all in 2008 and I love to compete. I am very sad about this but then I think that I am lucky because I will recover from this and I can still walk and do many things. Other people have it much worse than I do. I just get upset sometimes when I think about it. I want so badly to be able to jump up in the air and do my routine but I can't. It's just motivating me to train harder on other things."

While Garcia will not be competing at the Olympia she will be working the GNC booth.
